Are you looking for a place to take your summer vacation? Than Kelowna could be your answer. Located in the sunny and hot Okanagan valley, Kelowna offers an assortment of activities and accommodations for all.
A favorite place of tourists and locals alike to take a walk or bike ride is along the Waterfront Park which has beautiful views of the valley and Okanagan Lake. If you would like to take a longer walk, go under the bridge and on the other side you will find Abbott Street. The street will take you on a nice tour of stately homes and quaint bungalows beside the lake.
Another place to take a long walk or bike ride is the Mission Creek Greenway which starts at Orchard Park and makes its way down to Lakeshore Road. The gravel path of the Greenway is right next to the Mission Creek, a refreshing sight on hot summer days. If you need to rent a bike, stop by the Sports Rent store on Pandosy Road in the Village of Pandosy.
Situated in the hills of Kelowna, the Okanagan Lavender Farm provides a unique way to spend a summer afternoon. You can take a self-guided tour of the farm or join a tour that is led by the owner. After, you will want to try their lavender ice cream and lemonade. Be sure to take your camera as the views of the lake from the farm’s verandah are gorgeous.
For those who are more adventurous, Silver Star is a mountain biker’s paradise. Silver Star, a mountain resort above Vernon, has many mountain biking trails to choose from and stunning views of the Monashee Mountains.
One of the favorite things that locals and tourists like to do is hit the beaches on hot summer days. The most popular beach in Kelowna is Gyro Beach. Gyro offers a spot for everyone on the beach whether in the sun or shade. Behind the beach are volleyball courts with lots of room around for playing other ball and Frisbee games. There is also a place at the beach renting paddle boats and canoes which you can take on the lake for about an hour. If you are looking for ice cream or other snacks, then head to the snack counter located in the apple.
The new H2O Aquatic and Fitness Centre which opened in April is a perfect place to spend a hot afternoon indoors while still enjoying the water. The H20 aquatic centre has three slides, a surfing simulator, a hot tub and sauna, a river and wave pool, lap pool and diving boards. The aquatic centre has something for all ages to enjoy.
If you plan to stay longer than a day in Kelowna, you will want to know where to stay. For those who like the great outdoors, the Hiawatha R.V. and Campground Park is the best campground in town. Located next to a lovely creek, beaches and shopping, each camp site is surrounded by trees and cedars and has its own picnic table. The campground also has an outdoor pool and hot tub, so be sure to bring your swimsuit and towel.
Kelowna has many choices of lovely hotels, bed and breakfast places and resorts. But if you are looking for an alternative to the more expensive accommodations, one option is the Kelowna International Hostel. A good website to check the various types of accommodations is www.kelowna.travel.bc.ca.
So what are you waiting for? Start packing your bags, go with a friend or two and get ready for lots of fun during your stay in Kelowna!
